healthy living committee

Health for our citizens is a great concern in our state and we take this topic very seriously. We actively are doing our part to educate, advocate and support the citizens in Stephens and Jefferson counties on issues that can help everyone learn to choose the optimal care to live a good healthy quality of life.  

Several subcommittees have been formed to work on specific topics:

  • Physical Activity

  • Nutrition

  • Preventative Health

Physical Activity

Over the next three years, increase the number of total community physical activity events in Stephens and Jefferson County from 4 to 6.

Events may include:

  • Stampede the Trail 5k/Half Marathon

  • Jingle Jog 5k

  • Foster Care Walk in My Shoes

  • Breast Cancer Awareness Walk

  • May Your Health Be With You Event

Increase awareness and education of the benefits of physical activity for school-aged children in Stephens and Jefferson County.

  • Expand the School Walking Program from 1 to 2 schools over the next three years.

  • Implement the Walk to School Day in one school in Stephens or Jefferson County over the next three years.

Increase awareness and education of the benefits of physical activity for adults in the Jefferson and Stephens County communities.

  • Partner with four senior centers over three years to provide physical activity programs.

Nutrition

Increase the knowledge of the importance of good nutrition to Jefferson and Stephens County school-aged children.

  • Expand the Two-Bite Club from one to two schools over three years.

  • Implement in-school nutritional cooking classes in both counties over three years.

Increase the knowledge of the importance of good nutrition to Jefferson and Stephens County communities.

  • Increase participation in the Garden Fresh Diabetes program from five to seven over the next three years.

  • Provide education regarding gardening to six organizations in Jefferson and Stephens County over the next three years.

Educate Jefferson and Stephens County communities about locating fresh fruits and vegetables and nutritional programs.

  • Promote farmers' markets and stores where fruits and vegetables can be purchased.

  • Educate the community about nutritional assistance programs with a goal of increasing SNAP participation through collaboration with two new community partners.

​Preventative Health

Educate the Jefferson and Stephens County communities about the importance of various cancer screenings.

  • Increase education opportunities from five to seven over the next three years.

Educate the Jefferson and Stephens County communities about the importance of healthy work environments.

  • Continue encouraging agencies and organizations to participate in the Certified Healthy Oklahoma Initiative in partnership with the local health department, including expanding to one of the Jefferson County schools over the next three years.

Provide preventative health education and screenings to the Jefferson and Stephens County communities.

  • In both counties, the goal is to increase participation from two to five community-based events with a health focus over the next three years.

Educate Jefferson and Stephens County communities about the importance of immunizations

  • Increase the number of social media campaigns regarding immunizations from two to three over the next three years.

Establish a support group for those with cancer, family members of cancer patients, and survivors.

  • Increase the number of participants by 20% over the next three years.
